So you could say I’m a bit of a Burger snob. It started when I was 18 when my boyfriend, Mum and I visited Byron in Exeter; what a day that was. Feels stupid talking about burgers in such a sensual way but you haven’t lived if you haven’t had a proper burger (please no McDonald’s comments, that’s insensitive to these beauties).
My boyfriend and I have since gone to many burger places to try them all because why not. We have found so many new places and are still trying loads of new restaurants. Here’s our top 4 not in order because that’s too hard for me.
There are the mainstream options like Five Guys, where you can build your own burger essentially. Our typical order is a bacon cheese, then add bbq sauce, mayo and lettuce. The restaurant has an American diner feel to it and you will get the burgers wrapped in foil for that “drive through feel”. The burger patties are on the thinner side but as the burger standard order is with 2 patties it makes up for it. Five Guys can be pricey once you have got chips and a drink but I would really recommend it as a starter in to the more substantial burgers.
Next there’s Byron, Hubbox and GBK. All of which are chains so you can find them anywhere. Byron has had its backlash in the media with dietary requirements and now with some menu changes I need to go back and try the new menu items. Years ago Byron had a Smoky burger, which had chilli bbq sauce, lettuce, pickles, cheese, bacon, crispy onions and then the patty. The patty would usually come served medium as it was a steak burger, then you would add fries and the burger would be served with a quarter pickle on the side. Byron was my favourite place to go when I was close by and like I said it was the first “proper burger” I had tried so it is worth going and trying the new menu items and see what you think.
Hubbox we discovered at a University. It is a chain but a smaller one in comparison to GBK and Byron. Their burgers are similar and to your surprise we would go for a bbq one or just a generic hub burger which has the classic Hubbox sauce. Really delicious burger again and has a similar vibe to GBK.
GBK has the most memories for me as it is our go to place when going to Comic Con every year with our best friends. Again, we would tend to go toward and burger with bbq sauce, cheese and bacon. You know for ease haha. This place is similar to Byron in that it comes medium but you can ask for the meat to be cooked to your liking. The app also makes it super easy to order from your table and you can get some really good rewards from collecting points on the app.
So basically to cut this long post down. Those are the 4 places I would recommend trying if you were ever in a hunt for a decent burger. All of which are in the ££’s so it isn’t always a cheap meal but always worth it.
Let me know if you have any recommendations you have for me to go and try.
Gx
